Charles Malone
Advisor
Charlie’s first experiences with Literary Publishing were at the Center for Literary Publishing at Colorado State University and with Wolverine Farm Publishing. His work at the Colorado Review, and Matter Journal. He edited the Poetic Inventory of Rocky Mountain National Park and Light Enters the Grove: Exploring Cuyahoga Valley National Park through Poetry. Serving as the advisor to Brainchild Magazine since 2017 is one of the best parts of his job. He currently teaches writing in the community through the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State.
Marisa Bennett
Editor-in-Chief
Marisa Bennett is currently a Junior at the Kent State Stark campus and she is majoring in English with a minor in Creative Writing. This is her second year of Brainchild and she currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the team. Outside of Brainchild, she works at the Kent State Stark Writing Center as a Senior Tutor and is a member of English Club, FAB (Feminism for All Beings), and Sigma Tau Delta. When she’s not working or stuck doing schoolwork, she enjoys writing poetry and fiction, spending time with family and friends, and keeping her chubby cat Ember from chewing on electrical cords.
AUDREY PIERSON
Creative DIRECTOR
This is Audrey’s third year with Brainchild Magazine and she is excited to lead the team as Creative Director. She is a senior B.F.A Visual Communication Design student at Kent State and is president of AIGA KSU, the Kent chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. She is passionate about community building and using her voice to help others. When she’s not designing on her computer, you can find her at a coffee shop downtown, practicing her guitar, or enjoying live music. She’s honored to have been a part of Brainchild throughout her college experience and can’t wait to see what this year’s issue will bring!

Carla Wagner is a senior at Kent State University pursuing her B.F.A in Studio Art with a concentration in painting. She is one of our Art Editors and this is her second year on Brainchild’s staff! Carolyn Vargo is a junior getting a B.F.A. in Art Education major. She is one of the Art Editors and this is her first year! She loves to do all forms of art from printmaking to ceramics and spend time with her friends and family in her spare time.

Isabelle Pawlak is a Senior Marketing major at Kent State University with a minor in International Business. This is her 3rd year in Brainchild where she serves as the Marketing Coordinator. You will often see her scrolling through social media, reading Kristen Hannah books, or hiking in new destinations.

This is Ari’s first year as a designer for Brainchild. She is a sophomore pursuing a BFA in Visual Communication Design and also works as a designer for the University Housing and Culinary Services marketing team. During her spare time, she enjoys reading, drawing, spending time with friends, and petting cats.

Fiona Armstrong is a senior at Kent State University majoring in Visual Communication Design with a minor in User Experience Design. This is her first year on the Brainchild team as a designer. In her free time outside of school, she is either curled up with a good Agatha Christie novel, baking a sweet treat, or painting in her sketchbook.

Lauren Cohen is a junior journalism major with a minor in creative writing. This is her second year with Brainchild on the editing team. An aspiring journalist, she believes in bringing awareness to the most important stories in communities, whatever the format may be. In her free time, she enjoys playing the piano, listening to Taylor Swift, and hanging out with her sisters.

Olivia Asp is a junior at Kent State studying Visual Communications Design with a minor in environmental science. This is her second year working with Brainchild on the design team. She works as a designer at the university library and is involved with H2O church. She loves painting, reading, sewing, journaling, and hiking in her free time!

Ryan Spalding is a sophomore at Kent State University and is majoring in Integrated Language Arts. She is passionate about reading and writing. In her spare time she listens to lots of music, reads, and enjoys being at home with her fat cats. You’ll often find her rummaging through CDs at The Exchange, looking for her next music obsession. This is her first year working as an editor for Brainchild!
Virginia Doherty
Editor
This is Virginia’s second year serving as an editor with Brainchild and her third year at Kent State, where she is double majoring in Economics and History with minors in Marketing and Art History. At the Kent State Museum, she works with historical garments in the collections, and she writes a column for the Kent Stater. On long walks in the woods, you can find her thinking about novels she hasn’t read and obscure music she sort of knows. She aspires to eventually do her hobbies, whether that’s needlepoint, writing fiction, or dancing badly in her room.
Eloise Bennett

Eloise Bennett is a sophomore at Kent State University, double-majoring in Anthropology and Art history with a minor in Japanese. She is excited to complete her first year as an editor on Brainchild and to help bring this year’s edition to life. In her spare time, she enjoys ice skating, listening to a variety of tunes, and embroidering patches on her friend’s clothes. Eloise would also like to thank her cat, Yoko, for inspiring her in everything she does.
Maddison Evans
Editor
Maddison is a senior at Kent State studying both Zoology and English with a minor in Creative Writing. She is returning to Brainchild’s editorial team for a second year, and she also serves as an officer for Kent’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta and the creative writing club, Writer’s Bloc. In her minimal spare time, she is often working on her own writing or art or just taking a break to play video games while cuddled up with her cat, Eclipse.
Rinoa Chech

Rinoa is a senior at Kent State Stark Campus studying English with minors in Creative Writing and Women’s Studies. This is her first year at Brainchild, where she serves as an editor. You can find her making content for the Stark campus English department social media, reading profusely long fantasy novels, or drawing fan art of her own novel characters.
